If I had a dollar for every time I heard a client, friend or athlete say to me, “Why do I have to stretch? I hate stretching! Or this one gets me, “Stretching..what is that?”

For many outrigger canoe paddlers, surfers for sure and for all of the pilots and desk jockeys I’ve trained;- they share many tight muscles in common. We know multiple combined causes may contribute to muscle stiffness and tightness. These are just some examples.

And I’m not talking just occasionally tight—but all the time. Same areas. Same tension. Same frustration leads most to “I’m done. Stretching is a waste of my time.”

For those of you that do stretch, foam roll, warm up cool down to try to “loosen up” may still continue to still feel tight no matter what or how much of just what I mentioned, you do, this article is for you.

I really feel you. Naturally, you might assume the problem is flexibility. You’ve got hamstrings as tight as a tightrope. Or your low back is forever stiff.

But what if you discovered that’s not actually the issue?

What if I told you your tight muscles aren’t short, stuck, or broken—but responding to signals from your nervous system? If you’re really tight right now, please keep reading.

For so many people, tightness isn’t something you need to force out of your body. It’s something your body is creating on purpose.

If Your Hamstrings Could Talk…

They might say something like this:

“Hey… it’s not that we don’t want to relax. We just don’t feel safe enough to.”

That tightness in your hamstrings, hips, or low back?

It’s not random and it’s not you failing. There may be a little genetics, but you’re not doomed.

It’s communication. Stay with me.

Do You Feel Like This?

  • You feel tight no matter how much you stretch.
  • The same areas keep locking up again and again
  • One side of your body always feels like it’s doing more work
  • You feel “off,” but nothing is technically injured

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone—but more importantly, you’re looking in the wrong place for the solution.

Tight Muscles Aren’t the Problem

Most people that come work with me often assume:

  • Tight muscles need stretching
  • Tightness means something is wrong
  • More flexibility is the answer

But tightness is often your body doing exactly what it’s designed to do: protect you. Your brain is on alert to signal your nervous system. So your nervous system is constantly assessing one thing:

“Am I safe enough to let go?”

If the answer is no, your muscles will increase tension to create stability.

That “tight” feeling? That’s your body choosing control over risk. It’s really quite fascinating.

What’s Actually Causing the Tightness

Compensation Patterns

When certain muscles aren’t doing their job, others step in to help and I see these patterns all the time:

  • Weak glutes → hamstrings overwork
  • Underactive core → hip flexors grip
  • Instability → low back tightens

Over time, those helper or assisting muscles never get a break. They stay “on,” which is why they feel stiff, sore, and constantly tight. I see and manage this all the time in my practice.

Why Stretching Isn’t Fixing It

We know that stretching can feel good in the moment and provide temporary relief—and it does have its place.

But if your nervous system still perceives instability or imbalance, or perhaps a pattern of overdrive it will bring the tension right back.

That’s why you can stretch every day and still feel tight a few hours later, because you’re treating the symptom, not the signal.

The Nervous System: Your Real Flexibility Driver

“Tight muscles aren’t always a flexibility problem—they’re often your nervous system stepping in to protect you. When your brain doesn’t feel safe, it keeps certain muscles ‘on’ so you don’t move into ranges it doesn’t trust.”

Let me help you now make a mental shift so you can take a new path to help your body let go.

Your flexibility isn’t just about muscle length—it’s about how much range your nervous system allows you to access. We’re not going to go super deep into the belly of the muscle spindles and the physiology, but I want to share a cool process called The Protective Reflex. The Protective Reflex is a signal your brain receives from the receptors in the muscle spindles to cause this tightness if for example, you aggressively stretch. The spine actually gets the memo and contracts the muscle to resist the over lengthening.

So now you might understand better that muscles don’t “decide” to relax, your brain does.

There is lots of constant communication or signaling going on through a constant loop of feedback, your nervous system then regulates muscle tone based on:

  • Stability
  • Control
  • Previous injury
  • Movement patterns

If something feels off, it increases tension as protection.

If things feel stable and controlled, it allows muscles to let go.

Here is where we must rewire your approach and thinking process. This is why lasting change doesn’t come from forcing a stretch—it comes from changing the input your brain is receiving. It’s really brilliant!

A Smarter Way to Loosen Tight Muscles

Learn why you feel tight all the time even though you stretch, and how training your nervous system—not just your muscles—can finally help your hamstrings and hips let go.
My client Amanda Sullen learns how to calm the nervous system and strengthen
under active muscles.

Besides telling yourself and signaling your brain to allow for a greater range of “safe” motion, creating a new plan of action, instead of constantly chasing flexibility, I highly suggest you shift your focus to function. This takes a little time, patience, new training tools, awareness and a willingness to see the bigger picture of functional, total body movements. You’re doing great, Keep reading to learn more.

Strengthen What’s Underworking

When the right muscles do their job, others don’t have to compensate. You create more freedom, improve your overall performance and trust me as we age, independence. I can usually quickly and easily identify and pinpoint during our assessment which muscles and muscle groups are under performing.

Having my eyes on you ultimately allows you to learn as much as possible what and how you can begin to do to start unwinding yourself to moving and doing the sports you love with more balanced strength, therefore often times eliminating the tight areas or muscles.

Calm What’s Overworking

Next, I help my clients identify their overactive muscles that truly need more than stretching—they need reassurance that they can stop gripping. This is remarkable and many clients get relief that will hopefully last.

Build Stability and Control

If you’re walking, surfing, playing pickle ball with good core stability, shoulder, hip, and knee stability, your nervous system relaxes when it trusts your movement. It knows you’re doing the work and will reward you!

This is where intentional, specific strength training changes everything. Ahhhhh…. this!

Your Body Isn’t Fighting You

It’s easy to feel like your body is stubborn or broken when nothing seems to “work.” Many people write me and the first thing I read is, “I feel like I’m falling apart! I’m stiff and everything hurts.” I hear you, I see you and feel you. Trust me if I could just roll on some duct tape and take two Aleve, I’d be the first to sign up.

But as a former sponsored athlete, I know the race days you must show up no matter how tight you are, how much pain you’re in and all the while your body is screaming, stop. Or sometimes just the simple act of getting in our out of your truck can make one feel like they’ve aged 10 years in the blink of an eye.

Our bodies are actually incredibly smart. And while often I still had to paddle through the pain, my amazing body did it’s best to adapt, protect me and problem-solve in real time on the water with each and every stroke. Now that I’m not in it to win, I don’t paddle through the pain, or at least I really listen to my body and train it accordingly so all that I do in life, not just paddle is without tightness.

And once you start to understand all this, you stop trying to force change—and start creating the conditions your body needs to change on its own. Help you and your body have some wins and get relief. Maybe it’s time for this new approach.

The Mind Wins First

Everyone knows my mantra since 2010, is The Mind Wins First. I wrote an entire chapter on this in my book. Chapter 11 titled The Mental Part. ( which is really an entire book in itself ).

So the big message here that is hopefully sinking in is: before your muscles ever let go, your brain has to feel safe. Truth.

That’s the foundation of everything that we’re talking about in relation to how your nervous system interprets your body’s function by protecting it.

When you shift how your body is supported, how it moves, and how it’s trained, you change the signal.

And when the signal changes, the tension follows and hopefully resolves the tightness and let’s go.

Ready to Break the Cycle?

If you’ve been stuck in the loop of stretching, tightness, and frustration, there is a better way. Opening your thinking is the first step. Hey you’re here. High five!! First step: awareness and learning

And if You’re Ready to Loosen Up and Catch More Waves?

So if you’re still tight and you want to catch more waves, go faster In your boat, on your wing this summer, it’s time to stop fighting your hamstrings and start working with your nervous system instead. When your body feels safe and strong, your pop‑ups, flying down Maliko, bottom turns at Woodys, get smoother, your turns get sharper, and you recover faster between sessions.

If you’re an athlete, surfer, paddler, or weekend warrior on Maui and you’re tired of feeling “locked up” no matter how much you stretch, I’d love to help you unwind that pattern. Reach out to me, and let’s build a smart, nervous‑system‑based plan so your muscles can finally let go—and you can stay out on the water longer.

Please feel free to share this article if you know someone needs a little nudge to “stretch.” They will certainly thank you.
